In Berlin, people do not need much to be happy. One room, a laptop, a projector and a clear rule: You can talk about everything, not just over 6 minutes and 40 seconds. The game is called
Pecha Kucha is a form of fun entertainment with the PowerPoint presentation program. Each speaker must use 20 slides, but only 20 seconds are allowed to stay. This requires some thought in advance and lead to amazing insights in seconds with the audience.
One evening in Kreuzberg Festsaal "twelve speakers talk about such diverse things as the" new trend sport "beach-ball people, a fund-raising trip through South America collection (" user generated globetrotting "), future research, to conduct an emergency landing in Airbus, the big bang, bomb defusing the human spirit, zombies, the understanding of the incomprehensible and giant explosions in Siberia.
Souls striptease and networks
In between, but also very strange issues brought to the lecture. A young woman enters the stage and breathed into the microphone: "For 15 years I have occupied myself with myself, alone in the past four years, I have 2000 photos of me, I show 20 of them now." It follows a series of almost entirely naked photos, which the photographer apparently random emotional states such as depression or drug intoxication assigns. The presentation is like an application than Künstlermuse. Andy Warhol, where art thou?
Pecha Kucha was invented by two architects in Tokyo six years ago. IEPE Rubingh imported the format in 2006 by Berlin - for one of the first Pecha-Kucha events outside of Japan. The Dutch action artist was a few years ago with the invention of the
Chess boxing known. Together with the artist Joachim Stein and other creative Rubingh organized the slideshow for academics to this day.
"Pecha Kucha comes from the architecture, but it is a mixture of sport and art. It works so well because it is easy to understand," says Joachim Stein. "The 20x20-rule has been proven world-wide, the pace feels good and the presentation is entertaining," says Stein. In nearly 170 cities currently take people to the Pecha Kucha: From Bangalore to Honolulu, from Kuwait City to Zagreb. In London, came once more than 2000 visitors to an event.
Not only on stage young Berliner, by telling their latest projects - also in the audience seems to be digital bohemians assembly: There dominate wild side crest and ironic polo shirts, the boys wear caps, the girls means crest. Implies a spontaneous applause when a speaker is talking about zombies and a photo of six creative people in a café in front of their MacBooks silver shows.
The urban tribes is among themselves. This was quite deliberate, says IEPE Rubingh: "We are linking the scene with each other." The sometimes obscure themes mix for many viewers is a source of inspiration. By Pecha-Kucha nights have been exciting projects suggested. Here met the
Architects of the hip graft agency and members of the Artists Network successive Platoon. Today they build together a South Korean art in Seoul.
From the underground to the advertising agency
In another creative idea Powerpoint, the
Powerpoint Karaoke, Pecha Kucha has not much to do: "Karaoke is more without content, but one can truly experience high-performance," says IEPE, "but we are much more seriously and have always been important issues here."
On this evening speak a documentary about his experience as election observers in Congo. At another event reported to a doctor about the making of prosthetic leg, another speaker told of an AIDS epidemic in Ukraine and Till Behnke presented his social project
betterplace.org before.
This mixture also makes at the end of the attraction of the evening out. "Every speech you have to adjust, you never know what comes next - of course we know it's never as accurate," says IEPE Rubingh, from the speakers, only one wish: That passion they bring to their topic.
In Germany, meet followers of the "wild chatter" (so the translation from the Japanese) in ten cities. Each place has its own character: Frankfurt is a bit formal - as Pecha Kucha takes place even in the Architecture Museum, Munich is more on slapstick and Cologne had been very designlastig. To avoid boring, switch the Berlin makers often times their base: they were already in a supermarket in Wedding guests in a ballroom in Prenzlauer Berg and in a club in Mitte. One has even befriended spokesman from New Zealand and Brazil via Skype into the night the Berlin conference.
After six years in the underground springs crisp presentation technology now on the economy. In advertising agencies, new employees in the first meeting with the help of the 20x20-rule - and this year is the first Pecha Kucha at the Cebit computer fair. There have Internet capabilities in their managers power powerpoint show. In the once not somnifacient variant.
The next event:
Hanover, 5.3.2009, 12:40 clock: Cebit, Hannover, Hall 6Köln: 19.3.2009, 20.20 clock in the studio Colonia
